SURROUNDINGS
Etersheim is an ancient hamlet, situated between old harbour city Hoorn and picturesque towns Edam and Volendam. The agricultural world heritage area Beemster polder is very close. Open air museums Enkuizen and Zaanse Schans and capital city Amsterdam are just 30 minutes by car.
Besides walking and cycling, whisper boats are popular day tour vehicles, as is sailing or cruising on the Markermeer (Marker lake). The dyke is currently being reinforced, at Schardam and Warder the lake is still accessible. The church overlooks the restored mill of Etersheim, a museum mill with a cozy coffee house. The larger village Oosthuizen is close, which contains a supermarket, bakery, fast food take away and a pub.
The church stands just yards away from the popular Zuiderzee route. In addition to this continuous route around the IJsselmeer (IJssel lake), it is also located on several smaller walking and cycling routes through the Dutch agricultural landscape, with cows and sheep, dikes, canals and ponds, protected bird meadows, overflow land behind the dikes and lovely old villages. A nice walk is the Dik Trom path, that is specially meant for children, named after the children's books by writer C. Joh. Kieviet, who lived and taught in the old school of Etersheim. Much fun is the route where one has to cross canals with little pull ferries.
LET'S INTRODUCE OURSELVES
My name is Saskia, and I have been living with my children in the church since 2002. My 4 adult children (22-36 years old) often come back home, and sometimes help out in the B&B.
We are an active family, we like to swim or wind surf in the Marker lake, and we enjoy taking walks on the winding dyke and through the meadows. We like cooking, carpentering, drawing, board games, cycling and camping.
We are big music fans, and the grand living room has wonderful acoustics, so we have a piano, harpsichord and violins. Do not worry, you will not hear it in the guest rooms.
We've been remodeling the church for many years, an ongoing operation to turn the formerly no so habitable church more and more into our dream home. We'd like to share this special place with you, so in 2012 we started a bed and breakfast, and have enjoyed running it ever since!
